trader joes pretend cityIf you love Trader Joe’s, then you’ll go ga-ga for the new grocery exhibit at Pretend City. It’s exactly like a real Trader Joe’s, only it’s kid-sized!  You’ll recognize the colorful chalkboard displays and wooden shelves stocked with Trader Joe’s branded products.  Don’t we wish our kids were always this excited to grocery shop?

  • It looks just like Trader Joe’s with wooden shelves and check-out stands!
  • Kid-sized shopping carts, so your children can shop for their own groceries
  • Stocked with Trader Joe’s branded items…Joe’s O’s anyone?
  • Bright and colorful chalkboard displays just like the store
  • Kids can wear crew member Hawaiian shirts and look just like a TJ’s employee

Know Before You Go:

  • There are special events and visitors during the exhibit. Check the calendar of events on the website for more information. On the second Friday of every month, you can get 2-for-1 admission during Way to Play Days.
  • Pretend City is a nut-free facility, so choose your snacks carefully. They also have a few vending machines with lots of variety, including some healthier options.
  • There is a water play area, so you may want to bring a change of clothes if your child loves to splash.
  • Parking is free. There are about 20 spots in front of the museum that fill fast, as well as overflow parking behind the building. Follow the signs for parking.

Free Admission to Nixon Library

Free admission to the Nixon Presidential Library on President’s Day, February 20, 2017. Admission is normally $16 so take advantage of this! For this special day, they are planning a great program for you and the kids to enjoy. You will also get to meet Presidents Washington, Jefferson, Lincoln, and Teddy Roosevelt all day and the first 300 guests will enjoy a free slice of cherry pie.

This museum is more geared towards adults and older kids but it can also be fun for the younger ones. My kids particularly liked walking through the President’s house from 1910 and stepping aboard Army One, the helicopter used by four of our Presidents.

You should also know that the library just underwent a $15-million renovation. Visitor can now enjoy 70 new major exhibits, 30 unique multi-media experiences, 11 original films, 12 custom digital interactives, 10 curated archival film sequences, more than 600 photographs, 8,000 square feet of wall murals and more than 300 artifacts.

Last year there was a long line at 10am to get inside but eventually I realized that the line was to get a free slice of cherry pie. If you don’t care for the pie, you don’t need to stand in line. Just walk in.

Who wants to be dropped off in a huge field of delicious strawberries and let free to eat as many as you want right off the vine for a good 15 minutes? The only place you can do this, is during the strawberry tours at Tanaka Farms. The strawberry feast is after a guided wagon ride around the farm during which you will see and learn about the farm and get to sample 5-6 different fruits/veggies. You also get to take home a 1 pound basket full of strawberries. Totally worth every penny. I have been going on this tour every year for the last 7 years. They get a 10 out of 10, if you ask me!

  • Bring water, sunscreen, hats and a bag where you can put the baskets and leftover veggies from the tour.
  • Go when your kids are a little hungry maybe during snack time or 30 minutes before lunch time. You will be surprised how vegetable-daring they will be (see picture: my girl 2 years ago eating spinach!).
  • Bring wipes. Your kids will be completely red after eating all the strawberries.
  • Shoes will get dirty, so maybe don’t wear the most expensive shoes you own :).
  • It is free for 2 and under, take advantage of that!
  • New this year: some of the strawberries were planted in raised tubes (see picture below). Unless you ask them you won’t know if your tour guide will drop you off at this new area or at the regular strawberry field. If you have a preference, call ahead and ask them.

Weekends: every half an hours from 9:30am to 2:30pm. No reservation needed.

Weekdays: Monday through Friday, tours are available by reservation only.

$ 18 for ages 3+. Free for children 2 and under.

If you have 10 paying kids, kids pay $14 which includes a basket full of delicious strawberries. Adults pay $7 (no basket) or $14 (with basket). For a combination of 15 people (children and adults), it is $14 per person. So get your friends together and take advantage of this discount.
